Mar Tranquilidade - Guest Cottages on the Beach
The cornerstone of Mar Tranquilidade was laid in October, 1999, and it wasn’t long before we were accommodating the first guests. Our roomy stone cottages and apartments with thatched or tile roofs, showers and toilets, lie directly on the beach, surrounded by an acacia grove. Interspersed with shady gardens, the terraces and balconies offer beautiful views and cozy, private corners for relaxing. Our kitchen serves dishes prepared with many local products, including fresh fish and seafood caught right outside our door. Of course, we serve cold beer, soft drinks, wines and spirits. Our tap water comes from a mountain spring and is potable and good tasting. The wide variety of possible activities and the spacious bungalows make Mar Tranquilidade the perfect place for a longer stay. Guests who are interested in extended hiking tours in the area can safely store unneeded belongings until they return. At Mar Tranquilidade you can do your laundry.
wine & dinerestaurants
In order to return home from your vacation feeling fit and recovered you need not only rest and relaxation, but also exercise, fresh air, and, very importantly, good food! Offering our guests good tasting, good quality food is high priority for us, and over the years we have gathered a lot of experience. The cuisine in Mar Tranquilidade doesn’t really fit in any one category --- international, innovative, regional, seasonal, fanciful, plentiful, diverse and delicious --- all apply. We cook daily for several hours preparing a fresh, homemade meal of several courses. As far as what the sea has to offer, we have a fantastic situation: we have our own fishing boats, and the local fishermen land their catch right in front of our door. Fresh fish simply tastes better. The local farmers bring their products directly to our kitchen: manioc, yams, breadfruit, sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, onions, etc. A selection of special herbs and vegetables is often sent to us by Alfred and Christine Mandl from the valley of Paul, where they have large gardens, organically grown of course.
In Tarrafal there is also local pork, chicken and goat (meat and cheese). Other products are brought by aluguer from other parts of the islands and other parts of the world.
If you prefer vegetarian food you may find plenty at our buffet, but telling us in advance will insure that we take extra care to meet your needs. If you discuss it with us we also try within the possibilities to cater to food allergies.

location and attractions
First you must fly from wherever you land in Cabo Verde to São Vicente, take a taxi to Mindelo, the main town of São Vicente and from there take a ferry to Porto Novo on Santo Antão. (If you are already on Santo Antão -- in Paúl, Ribeira Grande or Ponta do Sol -- you must return to Porto Novo and continue on from there to Tarrafal.)
Residencial Antilhas in Porto Novo, just above the harbor, is the meeting point for transport to Tarrafal, or you may already find an Aluguer in the port when you arrive. The café on the terrace of Antilhas is a pleasant, shady place to wait. You can have breakfast, coffee or other drinks; they have clean toilets.
The trip from Porto Novo to Tarrafal takes about 2 to 3 hours. It is steep, slow, rough, dusty and bumpy, but it is an interesting, beautiful, unforgettable excursion, and the scenery as well as the arrival in Tarrafal make it worthwhile. Work is being done on the road that has already made part of the trip much more comfortable and will be improving. The average driving times are almost always closer to 2 hours. There are 2 types of transportation to and from Tarrafal:
Aluguer (or Collectivo) is a collective taxi that takes goods as well as passengers. The drivers do errands in Porto Novo and often wait until their cars are full before leaving for Tarrafal, so departure times vary: usually about 11:00 a.m., but sometimes earlier or later. For the return trip they leave Tarrafal at about 4:30 – 5:00 a.m.to reach Porto Novo in plenty of time to reach the early ferry. Price: 700 Escudos/6.36 Euro per person each way. Monday to Saturday.
“Taxi “ (or Frete) is a car with driver hired just for you and your traveling companions. You may leave any time or day you wish in both directions and make stops along the way. Price: 7000 to 9000 escudos for the whole car, 2 – 8 passengers, depending on which car and how much luggage. We can organize a taxi to pick you up directly in the harbor if you request it in advance. It is sometimes possible to share a taxi with other guests arriving the same day.
